Celebrity Malaysian chef Norman Musa's tour of the UK & Ireland continued at the weekend with his highly anticipated appearance at the Cardiff International Food & Drink Festival.
With the iconic Millennium Centre as the backdrop, the food festival at Cardiff Bay was buzzing with thousands of visitors which is a highlight of the Welsh capital's summer-long city festival. Attracting a capacity crowd to both his Saturday and Sunday cooking demonstrations in the John Lewis food theatre, Chef Norman wowed the audience in creating an authentic Kari Laksa Udang (Prawn Curry Laksa) and Rendang Ayam (Chicken Rendang).
Sprinkling his show with his characteristic charm and anecdotes about his self-taught upbringing, he received praise from local celebrity cook Angela Gray of Llanerch Cookery School. “Wales is so up for spicy food and we've been honoured that Norman chose Cardiff as part of his tour. He's great – fun and warm-hearted – and our audience have loved learning about Malaysian food – as a cuisine I'm sure it will do well here” said Angela.
Chef Norman, who's tour is being supported by MATRADE through it's Malaysia Kitchen programme, was equally jubilant, surprising the audience with the offer of free cookery classes with him next time he comes to Cardiff. “I want to create a real buzz about Malaysian food. Tasting it is one thing, cooking it though is one step ahead in making it more widely known and accessible to Westerners. That is my mission” announced Norman.
His appearance in the John Lewis theatre coincided with a feature on the secrets of Malay cooking by Chef Norman in a well-known British supermarket magazine, Waitrose Weekend. Norman was also on hand to sign copies of his book entitled Malaysian Food which is now in its third print run due to its popularity, as well as its recent launch on Kindle.
